چکیده

The growth of freshly formed nanoparticles has been investigated. A new analytical expression based on a recently developed exact solution for the condensational growth rate has been derived. Based on the new growth rate, a new approximate but accurate analytical expression for growth time has been derived. The expression includes transition regime effects on growth, molecule size effects on the collision cross section and particle thermal speed effects on the relative collisional speeds – the last two of which are typically neglected, but may have significant effects when dealing with the growth of freshly nucleated particles. To demonstrate the use of the derived expressions, the contribution of sulphuric acid and organic compounds on sub 3 nm and sub 10 nm particle growth rates has been studied. For sulphuric acid also the effect of hydration as function of relative humidity has been taken into account. According to the new expression the sulphuric acid concentration needed for 1 nm/h growth in sub 3 nm range is ca. 1.5×107 cm−3, which is a factor of 1.5 smaller than values typically used in aerosol physics based on standard model in kinetic regime.

Effects of charge and size on condensation of supersaturated water vapor on nanoparticles of SiO2.

The effects of size and charge on the condensation of a supersaturated water vapor on monodisperse nanoparticles of SiO(2) were investigated in a flow cloud chamber. The dependences of the critical supersaturation S(cr) on particle size at diameters of 10, 12, and 15 nm as well as on charge and charge polarity are determined experimentally. A novel electrospray aerosol generator was developed t...

Applying the Condensation Particle Counter Battery (CPCB) to study the water-affinity of freshly-formed 2–9 nm particles in boreal forest

Measurements on the composition of nanometersized atmospheric particles are the key to understand which vapors participate in the secondary aerosol formation processes. Knowledge on these processes is crucial in assessing the climatic effects of secondary aerosol formation. We present data of >2 nm particle concentrations and their water-affinity measured with the Condensation Particle Counter ...

Modification of Laminar Flow Ultrafine Condensation Particle Counters for the Enhanced Detection of 1 nm Condensation Nuclei

This paper describes simple modifications to thermally diffusive laminar flow ultrafine condensation particle counters (UCPCs) that allow detection of ∼1 nm condensation nuclei with much higher efficiencies than have been previously reported. These nondestructive modifications were applied to a commercial butanolbased UCPC (TSI 3025A) and to a diethylene glycol-based UCPC (UMN DEG-UCPC). Size a...

The lack of complete understanding of the substrate effects on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) growth poses a lot oftechnical challenges. Here, we report the direct growth of nanostructures such as the CNTs on stainless steel 304and brass substrates using thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) process with C2H2 gas as carbon sourceand hydrogen as supporting gas mixed in Ar gas flow. We used an especi...
